Water (Aqua)
No surprise, the first ingredient in many hair care products is water, since it acts as a carrier for all the other good stuff inside. Fun fact: “aqua” is the recognized term for water in the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI).

Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate
This one sounds more scientific than it really is… sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate is a fancy term for salts. It’s derived from coconut and is what produces that luscious foamy lather while you’re soaping up your scalp.

The name here is misleading as sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate is NOT a sulfate. A great addition to clarifying shampoos, this ingredient is a strong cleanser which a high propensity to foam.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine
One of the most common ingredients of shampoos and other soaps, cocamidopropyl betaine comes from coconut oil. Similar to our friend sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, this agent is used to boost foam while also acting as an emulsifier (helping to mix some of the other shampoo ingredients that don’t normally blend well together) and anti-static agent. This ingredient helps keep those flyaways tamed and under control.

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
Don’t worry about the pronunciation ─ this bad boy lends a good lather to shampoo while also serving as a cleansing agent. Basically, its name means it’s a sodium salt ester (a fatty acid) made from, you guessed it, coconut oil. Seriously, what can’t coconut oil do?!

The molecular structure of this fatty acid creates a mild way to combine water and oil with the effect of removing dirt. It won’t dry out your skin and providing a gentle cleansing effect, sodium cocoyl isethionate is your friend.

Butylene Glycol
Helping to retain and preserve the moisture of your luscious locks, butylene glycol is one alcohol that won’t dry out your hair. This non-toxic, non-irritating ingredient is water-soluble and is a great ingredient in shampoos and conditioners for straight and curly hair alike. Creating a smooth and thick product, butylene glycol is excellent at transferring these properties onto your hair.

PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide
Oh hey look, it’s another cocamide! Guess where this one comes from? Our friend coconut oil.

PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide enables clear shampoo formulations to be created and makes for good skin and lather feel of our products. It also creates a nice viscous product, so the shampoo isn’t thin in your hands!

Glycol Distearate
Here’s some science for you, glycol distearate is known as an “opacifier” or pearlizing agent because it makes shampoo less transparent and more “pearly” looking. Helping to provide a luxurious appearance, glycol distearate modifies the appearance and provides body to the product… and to your hair!

Macadamia Ternifolia (Macadamia) Seed Oil
Macadamia seed oil… now that’s nuts! But seriously, this oil comes from the nuts of macadamia trees. Liquid at room temperature, this oil is rich in fatty acids, potassium, and palmitoleic acid which makes it a great ingredient in haircare products for smoothing the hair.

This multipurpose ingredient has been shown to strengthen hair, smooth hair, and even make curly hair more manageable. Move over, coconut oil, there’s a new sheriff in town.

Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil
Cold-pressed from the best, our hemp seed oil is made from (you guessed it) the hemp plant. As you probably know by now, hemp does not contain the active ingredient of marijuana (THC) and so it is not psychoactive. But it can still take your hair on a wild ride!

Hemp for hair has many potential benefits including promoting hair growth, moisturizing, thickening, and providing shine, and even reviving damaged hair! This is probably due to being rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Hedychium Coronarium (White Ginger Lily) Root Extract
Native to Hawaii, and aside from smelling absolutely divine, the white ginger lily (or awapuhi) has many uses. In our case, we use the juice of the mature seed as a hair treatment.

White Ginger Lily root is used to keep hair healthy while moisturizing and leaving a pleasantly smooth feeling. Some have even noted an improvement in the thickness of their hair after use.

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice
Not just good for sunburns, aloe leaf juice is a major player when it comes to hair health. It has even been known to promote hair growth!

As a medicinal agent, aloe combats excessive oil build=up and dandruff on the scalp, while eliminating bacteria growth. Its chemical composition is similar to keratin (the natural protein responsible for hair growth) so it’s no wonder aloe leaf juice has extremely positive effects on the hair.

This powerful ingredient also adds strength and shine to the hair while antimicrobial properties help the scalp to heal. The composition of aloe includes amino acids, enzymes, hormones that help with wound healing and antiinflammatories, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal agent, and essential vitamins.

Now we’re wondering why all hair products don’t contain aloe!?

Cola Nitida (Cola) Seed Extract
Derived from the kola nut in the African rainforest, Cola seed extract contains caffeine and has stimulating, astringent, and anti-irritant properties, making it an excellent addition to any hair care product.

Contrary to popular belief, cola seed extract is not just used for flavoring your favorite fizzy beverages. The antimicrobial effects of this extract make it a powerful and effective ingredient in maintaining a healthy scalp and hair.

Paullinia Cupana (Guarana) Seed Extract
Chances are you’ve seen this one listed on your trusty can of energy drink. Not into fizzy, sugary, caffeine? No worries, guarana does way more than providing an energy boost.

This native Brazilian plant is found in the Amazon but has made its way to North America to be used in both beverages and hair care products.

Rich in antioxidants and antimicrobials, guarana can significantly improve the health of your hair and scalp.

Ilex Paraguariensis (Yerba Mate) Leaf Extract
Another extract that is Not Just For Drinking ™ yerba mate has many powerful properties. The caffeine and antioxidants make it both excellent to ingest (not in the form of shampoo, obviously) and apply topically. The green tea in yerba mate helps produce hair growth, and caffeine can also restore growth/prevent loss.

Yerba mate is added as it provides a natural shine while the antioxidant properties prevent cell damage to keep hair healthy. So, what’s the tea on yerba mate? Drinking it will certainly benefit your hair and immune system but of course, applying it directly will be even more powerful.

Panthenol
Found in many foods and natural hair care products, panthenol is a chemical substance that is converted into vitamin B5 when absorbed into the body. Naturally occurring from both plant and animal sources, panthenol is extremely commonly used as a moisturizer. In haircare, it’s also used as a softening, soothing, and smoothing agent, to help keep your mane tame!

Improving hair’s shine, softness, and strength while preventing environmental damage (read: styling with hot tools) is panthenol’s main purpose in our products.
